All Roomba bots, including the i3 EVO, also have a dirt-detection system—another unique feature you can’t find in other brands’ bots. When the Roomba senses that it’s passing over an area with a lot of debris, it’ll stop and make a few passes back and forth to pick up as much as possible. Robot vacuum cleaners often come with one special feature or another, but the Proscenic dyson robot vacuum M8 Pro has a whole raft of them. Not only can it operate as both a vacuum cleaner and a mop, it also comes with a self emptying charging station, which sucks the robot’s collection bin empty when it’s finished cleaning. It has a sophisticated smartphone app that you can use to control and schedule cleans and there are no obvious omissions from its extensive feature list.
But the dream is possible—and even if it isn’t fully realized in your home, it’s still super-convenient to not deal with a messy dustbin every time you use your robot vacuum. The downside with some of these other bots is that you might end up having a hard time getting customer support. It won’t always be clear where you can get spare filters, brushes, or other consumable parts, let alone major components like battery packs, wheels, or LiDAR assemblies. It’s tough enough to find these parts from established brands like Roborock, so it’s hard to imagine the smaller brands will make it any easier. If any of these brands disappear after a year or two, it wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened in the competitive world of robot vacuums.
For instance, if there are crumbs under the kitchen table, users can tell their Roomba to “clean under the kitchen table.” Areas of the home where children or pets might be playing can be set as “off-limits” areas. The vacuum’s “clean map reports” allow the user to see where the Roomba cleaned and for how long. Since iRobot has several models, it can be difficult to choose the best Roomba to suit your needs.
When the iRobot is finished, it stores itself in a recharging station. Roombas before the seventh-generation models do not map out the rooms they are cleaning. Instead, iRobot developed a technology called bissell crosswave cordless iAdapt Responsive Cleaning Technology. This relies on a few simple algorithms, such as spiraling, room crossing, wall following, and random walk angle changing after bumping into an object or wall.
The SpinWave has a quick setup that takes five minutes, including installing the app and connecting the unit. Additionally, setup and connecting to the app were seamless experiences, taking a total of 10 minutes. The vacuum also has a small footprint so it can squeeze into tight spaces. Schedule cleanings and get custom route suggestions in the iRobot app. Just press Clean or schedule Roomba on the go to loosen, lift, and suction dirt, dust, and hair from your hard floors and carpet. The App can control Roborock vacuum cleaners from anywhere with rich features. Most robot vacuums are made to suit certain surfaces better than others. Overall, however, Roomba vacuums tend to be most effective in uncluttered areas on solid surfacing or on low- to medium-pile carpeting. We’ve tested 30 robot vacuums and counting; here are the ones that didn’t make our top picks.
Meant for use on hardwood, tile, or stone floors, the M6 is perfect for cleaning spills, pet waste, and other messes. Similar to iRobot’s vacuums, the automated M6 mop features smart mapping and coordinated app control. Users can pair the app to voice-control devices in order to direct the bot to quickly clean up specified areas.
Just don’t watch it too closely—it acts a little weird sometimes. Shag and other high-pile rugs may have too high a threshold for the robot to pass over, or the fibers could clog the brush. We weren’t able to test any of them before the 2021 holiday season, but we’re confident that the Shark and lower-end Samsung will work similarly to all the other laser-nav robots described in the previous few paragraphs.
After a couple of days the bin only needs emptying once or twice a week, depending on the floor type and size of the cleaning area. In a medium-sized two-bedroom flat, I ended up emptying the bin and cleaning the filters once a week. The bin, filter, full bin sensor, front caster wheel, rotating brush, sensors and battery can all easily be removed for cleaning and replacement when necessary.
