The bikes were geared to 68 inches and weighed about 59lbs when packed with all the soldier’s gear. The soldiers rode with rifles strapped across their back carrying fifty rounds of ammunition. Their longest trip was 41, days when they covered 1,900 miles from Fort Missoula to St. Louis. In 1903, Henri Desgrange and his colleague Géo Lefèvre organized a long-distance race through France to boost sales for Desgrange’s sports magazine, L’Auto; the 19-day race would be the first ever Tour de France. To prove that the Rover was not only safer than the high-wheelers but faster, too, Starley organized a Rover race in which a number or riders beat the record time for a 100-mile ride.
It became the dominant manufacturer of American bicycles through most of the 20th century. After declaring bankruptcy in 1992, Schwinn has since been a sub-brand of Pacific Cycle, huffy mountain bike owned by the multi-national conglomerate, Dorel Industries. For more than 125 years, Schwinn has been giving people the joy and freedom to get out and enjoy the ride.
Employees reacted bitterly to the closing of Schwinn’s Chicago plants, some calling for a boycott of Schwinn products. When the sport’s original inventors demonstrated their new frame design, Schwinn marketing personnel initially discounted the growing popularity of the mountain bike, concluding that it would become a short-lived fad. The company briefly (1978–1979) produced a bicycle styled after the California mountain bikes, the Klunker 5. Using the standard electro-forged cantilever frame, and fitted with five-speed derailleur gears and knobby tires, the Klunker 5 was never heavily marketed, and was not even listed in the Schwinn product catalog. Unlike its progenitors, the Klunker proved incapable of withstanding hard off-road use, and after an unsuccessful attempt to reintroduce the model as the Spitfire 5, it was dropped from production. Despite a huge increase in popularity of lightweight European sport or road racing bicycles in the United States, Schwinn adhered to its existing strategy in the lightweight adult road bike market.
In 1949 Schwinn Black Phantom was introduced which was a lot more flashy and fun to ride. Chrome fenders, head, and tail lights, whitewall tires all became the recognizable features of standard Schwinn bikes. Over time, Schwinn became an innovator for the industry, developing mudguards, the Fore-wheel brake, and the cycle lock. Using his origin as a selling point, “German engineering” was a slogan often used to promote the quality of Schwinn bikes before the war. Schwinn’s rebranding was enormously popular, and by 1950 this one company was manufacturing up to a quarter of the bicycles made in the entire United States.
