EGO 56V ARC Lithium Telescoping String Trimmer with POWERLOAD Technology

Unlike most trimmers that let you place the handle for comfort, this trimmer adjusts. A telescoping handle moves to quickly match the height of the user. I know my wife is intimidated by gas powered equipment, and I imagine it’s easier to get kids involved with electric stuff as well. Typical work around that’s recommended, if time is an issue is to drop off unit for warranty service, buy temporary replacement tool.

The Ego comes with a push-button line-load system, which eliminates the typically tedious process of putting new line on the spool head. There are a variety of systems that do this, but the Ego’s is the easiest we’ve tested. It wasn’t the lightest trimmer we tried, but its excellent balance and handle adjustments made it one of the simplest to swing around and maneuver in tight spots.

I also have the leaf blower and the hedge clippers. The battery will eventually die, but the one that died on me was replaced under warranty. I also had a charger die which was out of warranty, but I have four batteries and three chargers so that’s not really a problem. There are other options with the Powerload head, though. The ST1511T has a telescoping aluminum shaft instead of carbon fiber if you’d prefer to go that route.

It makes it very simply to find and understand how each mechanism works. I’m interested in battery powered lawn equipment. However, there are a few issues I still have with them.

Kyle Selph is behind both major pieces of innovation, but that’s particularly important on the carbon fiber shaft. Kyle is a high-level cyclist in his free time and understands how the strength to weight benefits of the carbon fiber frame on his road bike extends to a string trimmer shaft. We’ve used a lot of string trimmer heads, and this Ego Powerload String system is, by far, the easiest to use. You just feed a length of trimmer line into the tool’s head—bringing it up to the halfway point. Next, you press the top-side button just behind the head. With a ratcheting motion, it quickly pulls the string into the trimmer “automagically” and you can quickly get back to trimming your lawn.

” Once the motor is at full speed and the line is cut, it’s still loud. The other potential negative is that the Worx 20-volt battery system isn’t as widely available as some others, most notably Ryobi. Worx does have a selection of 20-volt saws, lights, and drills, among other tools, but we don’t have enough experience with them to pass judgement on them as a full system. Yet as much as we value consistent battery compatibility, we think $100 for a cordless trimmer that hits all the right points is a solid value . A final touch that we appreciated was the little flower guard that sticks out at the front of the trimmer.
