The Solo Pro are Beats’ most impressive headphones to date. They have a lot of attractive features, from constantly adapting Pure ANC to always-on Siri, that make them a solid all-around set with great audio quality. But for me, a person with a large melon of a head, they can become quite uncomfortable in less than an hour.
If you tend to wear headphones around your neck sometimes like I do, these will automatically conserve power whenever music or other audio isn’t playing. Unfortunately, the Solo Pros don’t automatically pause music when you remove them or pull away a single ear cup, and that’s one feature I really wish they had. What I’m driving at here is that these are not the overpriced Beats of years ago where the product could hardly justify the premium asking price.
Although the sound signature remains bass-heavy, as is emblematic of Beats, it rarely overpowers vocal reproduction. Under the left earcup, you’ll find another button that lets you toggle ANC on and off with a double press while a single press activates transparency mode. This is handy for increasing awareness of your surroundings so you don’t have to take them off or pause the music when, for example, crossing the road.
Once you login to your Apple account, the Beats Solo Pro will pair with your entire iOS library. Road noise, engine drone and background office noise was reduced, while noisy commuters were slightly quietened. The headphones do a fairly good job of passively blocking out noise without noise cancelling active, too. They can’t beats studio3 quite match B&W, Bose or Sony but the Beats aren’t that far behind. The ear cups do a good job of passively blocking out sound, even if you don’t want to use noise cancelling. Thanks to the H1 chip, the Solo Pros are capable of Audio Sharing with other Beats headphones and earbuds – provided they have either a W1 or H1 chip.
Headphones are a very personal purchase, and that seems doubly-so with the Beats Solo Pro. As well as the fit and comfort factor, there’s the fact that for both sound quality and active noise cancellation it’s Beats’ way or the highway. Apple has continued to refine the Beats brand with new designs and features.
