If you want a robot vacuum cleaner with all the perks, look no further. However, we think this is an acceptable compromise given the more affordable price tag. The Dyson 360 Heurist is the first robot vacuum to rival a cordless vacuum regarding cleaning power. It’s got 20% more suction than Dyson’s previous robot vacuum cleaner, the Dyson 360, and as the motorized brush runs the entire width of the vacuum cleaner, you get full suction power even on the edges of rooms. It’s a narrower design than most robot vacuums, but the trade-off is it’s taller too.
Its dust container will be full of grey filth by the time its 45 minute cycle is done. However, I use our Dyson in our open plan living room / dining room / kitchen setup, and 45 minutes is just about enough. There are two main issues you might encounter when using a robot vacuum in a flat or home with thick carpet. It may struggle to get up onto chunky rugs and the suction force may not be strong enough to pull dirt out of the fibres. A few of the less smart models use boundary strips the robot vacuum’s sensors will recognise instead, letting you mark off these areas manually as no-go zones.
Other innovations include Dyson’s flagship cyclonic suction technology, powered by the same motor that’s found in Dyson’s handheld vacuums. A washable filter and dust bin are both hygienic and economical. Acing our pick-up tests on carpet and hard floors, this is a reliable investment. It’s self-emptying and can store up to 60 days’ worth of dust into its accompanying docking station.

The only downside to this is that the extractor bar is not the easiest to remove. Cleaning and maintenance are much like a standard upright and can take quite a bit of time and effort. Just like anything that rotates on the floors, it will collect longer hairs and threads that will get wrapped around the extractors. The good news is that the extractors are easily removable and without brushes and bristles to get in the way they wipe off easily. The 980 also has touch sensors to prevent it from colliding with obstacles and furniture. If a collision is detected, it will reverse and go around the obstacle without causing damage.
It’s the equivalent of dragging a damp cloth across the floor, but this is still something that’s acceptable for the price. The more expensive robots employ cameras and advanced laser sensors to map out their surroundings first before tackling each room. This means they can work out the most efficient route before getting started and don’t need to cover the same spot twice, as can happen with robot without these sensors.
Connecting the Heurist to our Wi-Fi took a few seconds, and, unlike the original, didn’t require the inputting of serial numbers, just our Wi-Fi password and the Dyson Link app. Once connected and charged, we could map rooms , assign safe zones, adjust the power levels for different floor types, and schedule cleaning jobs. We did have some connectivity issues where the Heurist dropped off the network, but overall, it was there when we needed it. There’s also Alexa and Google Assistant if barking orders at the help is more your thing. Our previous best value robot vacuum pick was Eufy’s G30 Edge but this similarly priced new model device surpasses it in almost every way.
Also added are dirt detection sensors that ensure the area being cleaned are actually free of dirt and debris. You’d be forgiven if you didn’t know that Dyson already has a robot vacuum in its collection.
