The Phantom 4 Pro manages a top speed of about 30mph in its GPS-assisted flight mode, with forward and rear obstacle avoidance in full effect. When flying in this mode, you won’t see the rotors in your video, even if the camera is pointed straight forward. The Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 will allow anybody to start as a beginner drone enthusiast and graduate as a professional drone operator. Due in part to these design changes and a new battery, DJI was able to squeeze more flight time out of the Phantom 4 at up to 28 minutes. I was unable to reach that mark, but I was regularly flying in a fair amount of wind. I averaged between 22 to 25 minutes if I ignored the constant low battery warnings.

Waypoint reproduces a flight between a number of points in space repeatedly, but you have to fly the path manually first. Follow tracks the position of the remote control and flies the drone to keep up with it as it moves. If you’re flying indoors, or in an area without GPS coverage, you can switch the remote control from the standard P flight mode to the A setting. This enables you to fly without GPS stabilization, but it’s a feature that only seasoned pilots should tackle. Once you’ve got your location set, make sure that the Pro’s firmware is up to date, and ensure that both the flight battery and remote control are fully charged.
You also need to enable “Multiple Flight Mode” in the DJI Go app. While flying in sports mode you have full satellite and vision positioning support. The Phantom 4 Pro also has a terrific camera with a 1 inch 20 megapixel CMOS sensor which is capable of shooting 4k at 60 frames per second video and Burst Mode stills at 14 frames per second. The RTK module is integrated directly into the DJI Phantom 4 RTK, providing real-time positioning data for improved absolute accuracy on image metadata. With consumer drone market booming and drones becoming more powerful, easier to use and equipped with rolling shutter cameras, there is an opportunity for professionals to use consumer drones for mapping work.
The DJI Go app warns you of this the first time you enter the mode, but never again. Regardless, it’s not a mode I would suggest for first-time pilots. First, if photo and video quality are your focus, the dji mini 2 fly more combo Pro or Advanced are absolutely worth saving up for.
The included box for the Phantom 4 fits everything you need to fly the drone. The drone itself is smaller than I expected, and fits rather neatly in its included polystyrene box. The box features a latch to keep it closed, and is intended to safely house and transport the drone. The controls of the Phantom4 do take some practice, but it’s the kind of thing that you’ll learn quicker via muscle memory – if I stopped to think which control would pan vs tilt for example, I got confused.
