Once you login to your Apple account, the Beats Solo Pro will pair with your entire iOS library. Road noise, engine drone and background office noise was reduced, while noisy commuters were slightly quietened. The headphones do a fairly good job of passively blocking out noise without noise cancelling active, too. Unfortunately for Beats, these compete directly with another Apple product, the AirPods Pro, which costs less ($250). Yes, the Solo Pro sound better and have more effective noise-canceling. But while the tiny AirPods Pro also don’t plug into an in-flight entertainment system, they’re a lot easier to carry around, and I’d rather drop $250 on them than $300 on these.
Once paired, the headphones automatically reconnect to the most recent device. They use Bluetooth 5.0 firmware and support AAC streaming. Again, this is mainly to the benefit of iOS users as AAC performance on Android devices is unpredictable. If you’re an Android user who wants high-quality beats solo pro wireless wireless audio, you’ll have to look into some Beats alternatives. Battery life is 22 hours if you stick to noise-canceling and transparency modes. If you turn both of those off (with a double-press of the aforementioned button), you can get up to 40 hours of good old music playback.
I was slightly sceptical about how well the Solo Pro might perform in this regard since we were left rather underwhelmed by noise cancelling of the brand’s Studio 3 headphones. However, I needn’t have worried because the Solo Pro delivered with aplomb. That’s a significant difference, and one that’s likely been made with improved passive sound isolation in mind, but it makes for relatively comfortable wearing, too. Unlike some Apple products, however, there are no problems with using the Solo Pro with an Android phone.

The Beats Solo Pro offer better overall noise cancelling performance than the Microsoft Surface Headphones 2, but this is under optimal conditions. Since the Solo Pro is an on-ear headset, it’s unlikely that you’ll maintain a consistent fit as it jostles on your head as you walk around. If you want more reliable, albeit slightly less effective noise-cancelling, you should get the Surface Headphones 2. Microsoft’s headphones feature an over-ear design and they apply much less force to the sides of your head than the Beats on-ear headphones. If you want a headset for conference calls, few options are better than the Microsoft Surface Headphones 2, because they have very good microphone quality and an onboard mute switch.
They’re much thicker than previous Solo models, which helps enhance comfort. The padding on the headband has more cushion as well, and it pinches your head less. Sure, you need a good seal for active noise cancellation to be effective, and that requires a certain degree of pressure.
Although the sound signature remains bass-heavy, as is emblematic of Beats, it rarely overpowers vocal reproduction. Under the left earcup, you’ll find another button that lets you toggle ANC on and off with a double press while a single press activates transparency mode. This is handy for increasing awareness of your surroundings so you don’t have to take them off or pause the music when, for example, crossing the road.
If you happen to work in a noisy office or can’t stand subway din, the Solo Pro may be worth the extra few bucks. Then again, in order for the ANC to work effectively, Beats tightened up the clamping force; for something more comfortable with just as much style, the Solo3 may be a better fit.
