2021 Ego POWER+ 15″ STRING TRIMMER WITH POWERLOAD ST1521S 21

In this case, you simply flip the lever, pull or push the aluminum telescoping shaft to the desired height, and you’re good to go. We prefer to do it while standing so we can see exactly where we want the Ego Powerload String head to fall for our height. For most of us, the adjustment came down to a difference of just 2–3 inches. The EGO Power+ PowerLoad String Trimmer with Telescoping Aluminum Shaft does something unique.

I’d say that I abused the tool, and kept it running nearly continuously for a little over two hours. My three 5.0Ah batteries could have kept me going for even longer, but I ran out of line. One of the biggest pain points of lawn care is now as simple as pushing a greenworks pro button. Ego Powerload String

Get over 60-minutes of continuous cut timewhen used with the included EGO 56V 4.0Ah ARC Lithium™ battery. Patented POWERLOAD technology automatically winds your trimmer line. A carbon fiber shaft makes it the strongest string trimmer on the market

I might try it with a 2.5Ah battery, but I don’t think there will be much benefit to ergonomics or weight. Buying into EGO’s 56V cordless outdoor power system is easier on the wallet if you go with the 2.5Ah kit. But if you already have a charger and 5.0Ah battery, the bare tool is a good option. We tested the attachment-capable Kobalt KST 140XB-06 80V Max Straight Brushless Cordless String Trimmer and didn’t like the weight or the fussy interface. It also has only two speeds and no true variable-speed trigger. As for its downsides, we grew frustrated with the small debris guard, which caused our legs and shoes to be covered with grass trimmings.

There’s a little internal motor just to wind the string onto the head in a few seconds. We got 30 minutes of runtime out of the included 2.5 amp hour battery. Again, we actually longed for a less powerful speed setting for efficiency on light-duty jobs.

Every EGO 56 Volt ARC Lithium battery powers the entire POWER+ platform of 50-plus tools. Loading the string on the Ego Power+ is relatively easy thanks to the Powerload feature. To load, you merely need to insert the string and press a button at the base of the shaft, and it will wind the string for you. This method is easy and efficient, though we found the spool difficult to open in the event of maintenance. To feed out more string, you need to lightly bump the trimmer head against the ground, allowing for uninterrupted weed-eating action. Speed settings are adjusted by changing the pressure on the trigger, though the range is essentially high speed and then higher speeds.

I say temporary, because you have a 90-day return period , that you’re just going to return for a refund after getting your original tool back. I wished at one point the handle had tool-free adjustments, but a minute with a hex key before the next session is all that will be needed to dial it in for my preferences. Tool-free adjustments sometimes loosen up over time and can be a hassle to retighten, and so long-term the 4-screw shaft clamp will work just fine. The testing conditions were very aggressive and very demanding.

The Ego’s relatively pleasant sound is not only good for your own hearing but a courtesy to your neighbors, too. But the Ego isn’t just for clear-cutting fields and destroying the invasive Japanese knotweed (although it’s certainly wonderful for that). The trimmer has two speeds and a variable-speed trigger. In those more-delicate areas, we switched to the low speed setting, so we could maintain the ease of a full trigger pull but not have the trimmer at top speed. To test each trimmer’s upper range, we pitted each one against a large stand of Japanese knotweed. Ego’s ST1511T far outperformed the other brands in run time and power.
